Some Tomorrowland visitors walked into the Freedom Stage without even knowing who Frank Verstraeten was. Ninety minutes later, they walked out as fans.

For Belgian dance fans who lived through the late 1990s and early 2000s, Frank Verstraeten hardly needs an introduction. The entrepreneur, technology pioneer and man behind the legendary Antwerp nightclub Zillion helped shape a chapter of Belgian nightlife history.

But at Tomorrowland 2026, something remarkable happened.

A completely new generation discovered him.

On Friday, July 17, Verstraeten made his long-awaited Tomorrowland debut at the Freedom Stage. Tomorrowland gave “Mister Zillion” a 90-minute slot built around a special Zillion experience, featuring twenty completely reworked versions of legendary Zillion classics.

And judging by the reactions afterwards, it worked.

“I had no idea who he was, but I’m a fan”

Perhaps the most interesting part of Frank's Tomorrowland appearance isn't simply that people enjoyed the set.

It's who enjoyed it.

Across the Tomorrowland community, visitors started sharing remarkably similar stories.

They hadn't planned to see Frank.

Some didn't know Zillion.

Some didn't even know who the man behind the decks was.

They simply wandered into Freedom — and stayed.

One visitor described walking into the stage with “zero knowledge of Frank” and still thinking about the performance days later. Another watched the set afterwards and summed up the experience simply: they had no idea who Frank was before, but were now a fan.

Others called it their favorite set of Weekend 1 or one of the most underrated performances of the weekend.

That's quite an achievement on a festival filled with some of the biggest DJs on the planet.

From Zillion to Tomorrowland

For those only discovering him now, Frank Verstraeten's story goes much further than one DJ set.

He was the driving force behind Zillion, the legendary Antwerp nightclub that became famous for combining music, technology, visuals and entertainment on a scale that was extraordinary for its time.

Frank wasn't simply interested in running a nightclub.

Technology was part of the experience.

Years later, that same obsession with screens and visual technology would become an important part of another Belgian dance institution: Tomorrowland.

Through his company Pixelscreen, Verstraeten has been closely involved with the LED infrastructure at Tomorrowland for years.

In other words, thousands of festivalgoers had already experienced Frank's work long before many of them knew his name.

They had been looking at it.

The man behind the screens finally stood in front of them

That makes his 2026 appearance particularly special.

For years Frank helped create part of the visual world surrounding Tomorrowland from behind the scenes.

This time, he was standing behind the decks himself.

And even getting there wasn't straightforward.

Just before his Tomorrowland debut, Verstraeten broke his collarbone after a fall. His performance suddenly appeared to be in danger.

He played anyway.

The DJ booth was adapted so he could perform, and Frank stepped onto the Freedom Stage with his arm in a sling.

What followed wasn't simply a nostalgia set for people who remembered Zillion.

It became an introduction.

Old-school history, new-school audience

Musically, the performance connected different generations.

Classic trance and Zillion influences were reimagined with a contemporary sound, moving through progressive house, melodic techno and trance.

Fans specifically praised the transitions, the visuals and reworked classics including tracks such as For An Angel, Café del Mar and Airwave.

One fan described the performance not as a playlist of individual tracks, but as one continuously evolving composition.

Another had gone to Freedom without knowing anything about Frank while friends headed towards the bigger names.

Afterwards, that unexpected set became one of the reasons they remembered Tomorrowland.

And perhaps that's the best compliment Frank could have received.

A Belgian club legend finds a new generation

There is something fitting about all of this.

More than two decades after Zillion became part of Belgian nightlife history, Frank Verstraeten didn't need people to know the story beforehand.

He simply played.

And the story came afterwards.

People went home, searched his name, discovered Zillion, learned about his involvement with Tomorrowland and suddenly realised that the man they had just watched wasn't some unknown DJ they happened to stumble across.

He had been part of Belgian electronic music culture for decades.

For older ravers, the Tomorrowland performance may have felt like a piece of history returning.

For younger ravers, it was something completely different:

the discovery of a new favorite DJ who, as it turns out, was already a legend.

And judging by the reaction after his first Tomorrowland performance, Mister Zillion might have just started a completely new chapter.
